These worksheets and task cards provide support for your teaching of algebra and word problems in Grade 2 and are aligned with the Australian Mathematics Curriculum. Students are required to solve word problems by using self-chosen strategies for addition and subtraction. The resource includes a reference sheet that explains different types of word problems e.g. join, separate, part-part-whole and compare problems with examples and matching number sentences. There are also some suggested strategies that students should be taught to enable them to solve word problems.


These materials may be used in small or whole class groups. The worksheets would make excellent consolidation and review work and could be used to assess your students’ ability to solve word problems. The task cards may be used in a variety of games and activities - whole class games such as Scoot and Scavenger Hunt (instructions included), or they can be used by small groups or individuals. Their versatility allows you, the teacher, to adapt them to use in many ways. Recording sheets and answers are also included.
